This week, (October 21 & 22, 2025), visitors to IHEEM’s flagship Healthcare Estates event in Manchester, will be able to view a groundbreaking prototype of a modular in-patient bedroom. The initiative aims to help drive the industrialisation of Hospital 2.0, the Government’s multi-billion-pound New Hospital Programme (NHP).

Commissioned by the NHP, the full-scale prototype, complete with bedroom, ensuite and adjoining corridor, is currently under review by ministers, the NHP, NHS and other critical stakeholders, including public and patient forums. If approved, the prototype will serve as the standardised in-patient bedroom across the entire NHP.

Delivered through Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), the prototype aims to mitigate risk in new hospital projects by ensuring a ‘right first time’ approach to prevent complex and costly design changes at later stages. As an MMC modular solution it will also accelerate the delivery of the next generation of hospitals.

Right first time

This prototype allows the NHP to validate and verify the spatial requirements for the in-patient room and bathroom pod, along with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) interfaces and adjacent corridor space. The prototype is undergoing extensive clinical testing ensuring the design is optimised and futureproofed for next generation healthcare settings.

The prototype has been developed by offsite construction specialist, Reds10 in its manufacturing facilities in Driffield, East Yorkshire. Founder and Chairman Paul Ruddick says: We firmly believe in the potential of industrialisation to revolutionise the construction industry. The New Hospital Programme’s commitment to integrating Modern Methods of Construction into a standardised and programmatic approach will transform the delivery of this critical infrastructure, improving productivity, quality and sustainability while delivering better value. We are excited to contribute by producing a modular solution for in-patient bedrooms that can expedite the delivery of the next generation of hospitals.”
