NHS outpatients appointments rise 64.8% in ten years

The Hospital Outpatient Activity 2018/19 report from NHS Digital reveals an increase in outpatient appointments and attendances in the financial year ending March 2019 in excess of 3%.

 

The report covers outpatient activity in English NHS hospitals and English NHS-commissioned activity in the independent sector. 

 

In 2018-19, there were 123.4 million outpatient appointments. This is an increase of 3.3% from the previous year and 64.8% from ten years ago.

 

In 2018-19, there were 96.4 million outpatient attendances, an increase of 3.1% from the previous year and 59.1% from ten years ago.

 

Between 2008-09 and 2018-19 'Did not attend' instances have increased by 32.1% whereas Hospital and Patient Cancellations have increased by 150.1% and 124.2% respectively.
