Addressing parliament yesterday (February 11), the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock announced the immediate launch of a capital facility to support any urgent works the NHS needs for the response to coronavirus: “such as the creation of further isolation areas and other necessary facilities.”
Last week, a letter from Professor Keith Willet (NHS Strategic Incident Director) instructed all Chief Executives and Medical Directors to create coronavirus priority assessments pods at every hospital as a priority, to help to prevent A&E departments already under winter pressures from becoming overwhelmed.
“The situation will get worse before it gets better,” Matt Hancock admitted in parliament. “We will be guided by the science. Be in no doubt, we will do everything that is effective to tackle this virus and keep people safe.”
