Hemel Hempstead General Hospital has an urgent care centre (UCC) which is open from 8am to 10pm daily, seven days a week. Other facilities provided by the Trust on site includes a medical inpatient ward (Simpson ward), endoscopy unit, diagnostic imaging and outpatient clinics. The inpatient ward was transferred to the Trust from another provider in October 2019.

The UCC is a nurse-led unit co-located with a 24-hour GP service and provides a service for adults and children over two years old with minor injuries and illnesses. It also provides a referral point for the Trust’s deep vein thrombosis service.

Our inspection on 18 and 19 February was unannounced. During our inspection we spoke with 8 staff, 4 patients and relatives. We reviewed 8 sets of medical records. During and after our inspection we also reviewed a wide range of documentation including policies, standard operating procedures, meeting minutes, risk registers, actions plans and results from local audits.
