Grading Explained: Requires Improvement

Inspection visit took place April 20 - May 14, 2021.

This was an unannounced inspection of urgent and emergency care services, surgery and maternity core services because at the last inspection the Trust overall was rated as requires improvement and the CQC had concerns about the quality and safety of some services.

Overall, the Trust and each location was rated as requires improvement.

Following this inspection, under Section 31 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, the CQC imposed urgent conditions on the registration of the provider in respect to the regulated activities of Diagnostics and Screening and Treatment of Disorder, Disease and Injury. This action was taken as the CQC believed patients may be exposed to the risk of harm if it had not done so.

During the inspection, the CQC also became aware of concerns about the stroke pathway and did a further, unannounced responsive inspection of this service at Lancaster Royal Infirmary and Furness General Hospital, also resulting in conditions.
