Stafford inquiry could cost £1m

Anthony Sumara, the chief executive of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, has warned that the impending inquiry into failings at Stafford Hospital could cost £1m.

A public inquiry is due to begin next month following claims that between 2005 and 2008  there were over 400 more deaths at the hospital than would have been anticipated.
£1m would open a ward for a year, it would get you 30 nurses for a year. Don't forget, if you're paying for it in the public inquiry it's a non-recurring figure, so actually you only get it for the one year, but we could buy a lot of equipment with £1m.
Two previous inquiries have already been held into the hospital and both found evidence of neglect, though they were conducted privately, leading to a campaign to for a public one.
