Protests over proposed NHS cuts

The weekend was marked by protests over proposed NHS cuts, with groups gathering at Gloucestershire Royal and Stroud General hospitals.

A This is Gloucestershire report said that supporters of the Stroud Against Cuts group voiced their anger at cuts “that they say could decimate the quality of care”.

The group says they hope their action will steer NHS chiefs in the direction of choosing a standalone NHS Trust to take over the running of some services.

Andrew Causon, a campaigner at Gloucester Royal Hospital, told This is Gloucestershire: "We are facing up to cuts worth around £150m in the coming years. This will have a direct effect on the patients at Gloucester Royal and it is important people voice their concerns."

The action group has stressed that privatisation of services is not the answer.

The protests come as the NHS Gloucestershire said 63 organisations had shown an interest in running community health services in the county.
