NHS Improvement launches new ‘Lean’ programme

NHS Improvement has selected seven Trusts to take part in its new three-year ‘Lean’ programme which will deliver a lean management system across each organisation. Lean is a method to allow staff and patients to improve their own processes and ways of working.

The programme will build on NHS Improvement’s partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute, which began in 2016, and the success of other independent programmes in the NHS, for example those implemented by Western Sussex Hospitals, Royal Bolton Hospital and Trusts in the North East of England.

The Virginia Mason Institute is well known for helping healthcare organisations around the world to create and sustain a lean culture of continuous improvement.

The NHS Improvement programme aims to provide a wide range of tools and hands-on support to Trusts, including coaching and mentoring, education and certification in lean techniques. In time, they will be able to train their own staff and share learning and experience with each other as well as the wider NHS.

The seven Trusts selected for this lean programme are:

Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust

Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust
