New NHS England head to launch structure review

Simon Stevens, the new head of NHS England, has launched a series of reviews and inquiries to look at the financial sustainability, structure and openness of the NHS.

The structure review will consider whether to abolish NHS England’s policy directorate.

“What I am going to do over the course of the next 180 days or so is work with other national bodies and with [CCGs] locally and local government partners and so on to really fundamentally try to answer the question: what are the things the NHS can now do to further contribute to putting itself on a sustainable footing and where will that get us?” says Stevens.

Stevens, who took over from Sir David Nicholson NHS England at the beginning of April, claimed the review of NHS England’s national structure and systems follows staff concerns about its ‘hierarchical’ approach.
