Gilbert Bain Hospital receives ISO14001 accreditation

Sodexo, the FM services provider and contract caterer, has achieved the ISO 14001 accreditation for its environmental management system at Gilbert Bain Hospital, part of NHS Shetland. The company said it made it a priority to achieve the ISO environmental management system accreditation as the hospital is in the Shetland Islands, which have many environmental designations including areas of outstanding natural beauty and sites of special scientific interest.

The ISO 14001 accreditation recognises environmental management systems that help organisations continually improve their environmental performance by measuring and monitoring their impacts and implementing initiatives to reduce them. To achieve the accreditation, companies need to demonstrate compliance in a number of key areas including monitoring the impact of operations, setting targets and objectives, and demonstrating continuous improvement.

Sodexo worked closely with hospital staff to develop an environmental management system which enables them to monitor and manage the impact that Sodexo has on the environment. To meet the standards, the on-site team developed an environmental policy detailing its position and priorities regarding environmental practices at the hospital.
This achievement is a clear demonstration of Sodexo’s commitment to the environment and to improving the standards of its operations at Gilbert Bain Hospital. The next year will bring challenges and will require continued effort to maintain and build on high standards. I am very impressed with the dedication of the staff at the hospital, it has been a real team effort and everyone deserves credit for the successful implementation of the standard.
