Catherine Bell and David Heymann appointed to the Departmental Board of the Department of Health

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has appointed Dr Catherine Bell and Dr David Heymann as non-executive board members of the Department of Health. They join Mike Wheeler, who is the existing non-executive member of the Board.



Dr Bell will receive remuneration of £15,000 per annum plus expenses. In addition to her role at the Department, Dr Bell is a Non-Executive Director of the Civil Aviation Authority, United Utilities Group Plc and Ensus Ltd. She is also a Governor of the London School of Economics and Chair of the Investment Committee of the Civil Service Benevolent Fund and brings with her a wealth of experience from across Whitehall and the private sector. Dr Bell’s appointment is for a three year period from 1 January 2011.


Dr Heymann is not remunerated for his role on the DH Board but may receive expenses. In addition to his role at the Department, Dr Heymann, is Chair of the Health Protection Agency. His appointment runs from 1 January 2011 to April 2012 and he will provide valuable support and challenge in the run up to the transfer of the Health Protection Agency’s functions to the Department of Health. His extensive experience, including in the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (USA) and the World Health Organisation will bring significant insight and expertise.
