Security fears halt PC recycling

Concerns over the safety of data is stopping businesses from recycling computers and electronic equipment, according to recycling firm Business Waste.

The company says it estimates that up to 95% of office PCs are sent to landfill and many firms are unaware of regulations for their proper disposal. A survey performed by Business Waste revealed that 70% of the 500firms it surveyed said data security was the main reason why they did not recycle equipment, while 12% said it was simply too expensive.

Business Waste commercial director Mark Hall said e-waste is currently the fastest growing type of waste that it handles, but so much more could be safely recycled with data being wiped from equipment.

“We’ve stood by and watched as employees set about perfectly good but ageing equipment with hammers, and they shouldn’t have to waste these resources,” said Hall.
