GPs set to become more involved at Newark Hospital

Enhancing the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) to include providing an out-of-hours GP service is among several proposals being considered for Newark Hospital.

Enhancing the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) to include providing an out-of-hours GP service is among several proposals being considered for Newark Hospital.

The MIU was previously an A&E department until it was downgraded in 2011, with Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust coming under heavy criticism for doing so.

The proposals are partly in response to a report which was part of the national Keogh Mortality Review. If adopted, they will mean more local services for Newark residents at the hospital, with GPs becoming far more involved in the successful running of the hospital. Patients who need more intensive emergency care or complex operations would continue to be transferred to surrounding hospitals.

The Vision and Strategic Direction for Newark Hospital will now be considered by officials, with a final decision expected to be made when the Trust's board meets on 29th October.
