Fewer hospitals, more health centres, groupssay

The Academy of Royal Colleges, the NHS Confederation and the patient group National Voices say they believe that the future of the NHS lies in expanding GP surgeries and health centres, as well as a greater investment in social care, The Telegraph reports.

The alliance of doctors, managers and patients has warned that up to 20 hospitals across the country may have to shut and services should be transferred out of hospitals into the community.

Doing so would actually improve patient care and decrease waiting times in A&E units, they say. Current studies show that over 300,000 patients waited more than four hours to be treated at A&E in the first three months of the year.
