Doors closed to new patients as C diff cases rise in Scottish hospital

The Scotsman has reported that Lockhart Hospital in Lanark has had to close its doors to new patients following an increase in cases of Clostridium difficile.

According to NHS Lanarkshire, seven patients were confirmed to have tested positive for the infection since June.

At present, new patients will not be admitted to the 30-bed hospital, which provides rehabilitation, medical and terminal care.

"Our monitoring procedures have allowed us to identify these cases early and take rapid action to reinforce our infection control systems within the hospital” said Dr Chris Mackintosh, associate medical director of primary care at NHS Lanarkshire.

"This has included enhanced cleaning, hand hygiene and prescribing measures. We have also sought guidance from Health Protection Scotland to ensure we are taking all appropriate measures.

"As an additional precaution, we are not admitting further patients to Lockhart Hospital at this time and we will review the situation next week."
