Bet on BIM, says expert

Expert engineer and academic, Graeme Davies, in a recent article for FM World pointed that construction and running of buildings accounts for about half of all carbon emissions in developed world countries.

Expert engineer and academic, Graeme Davies, in a recent article for FM World pointed that construction and running of buildings accounts for about half of all carbon emissions in developed world countries.

He said: “It should follow, therefore, that one of the most effective ways to reduce carbon emissions is to address how buildings are built and operated throughout their life cycle.”

It is for this reason that the use of building information modelling (BIM) is especially important and “it is significant, therefore, that Whitehall is championing the use of BIM”.

He said that all new government buildings had to adopt BIM by 2016 and this provides a window for facilities management operators – or facilities managers - to run more efficient buildings, given the depth of detail it can provide on a floor-by-floor basis.
